Three Steps to Worker Safety in the Distribution Center
Uniform company takes a top-down approach to transform itself into a safety star.
(Boonton, NJ, March 7, 2013) When Cintas Corp. raised a safety-certification flag in a ceremony at its distribution center in Sparks, NV, in late 2012, company executives and safety regulators gathered to cheer the achievement.
The flag-raising marked another step in a dramatic turnaround for the uniform company that five years ago was known as a safety laggard.
Cintas has learned that safety and profitability can co-exist, says John Thompson, Cintas' vice president of distribution and global logistics. "The beauty of it is that when you have a workforce that is engaged in safety, productivity and profitability almost always follow. In fact, Cintas' safest locations are often our most profitable."
In the March issue of industry newsletter Distribution Center Management Thompson explains how Cintas turned around its safety record by focusing on:
- Buy-in from the top.
- Sustained attention.
- Training for managers.
