Looking ahead: Integration adds complexity to DC managers’ jobs in 2006, while many old challenges remain

(Boonton, NJ, January 3, 2006) — Distribution center managers’ jobs will continue to grow more difficult in 2006, says industry newsletter Distribution Center Management in its annual Looking Ahead report.

The newsletter notes that the trend throughout the supply chain is toward further integration. And the warehouse is no exception. In 2006 the distribution center will continue along the path to becoming an integral link in the purchasing, inventory management, and customer service chain, and in more progressive companies will forge closer bonds with forecasting, planning, and marketing.

"This in turn," notes editor Troy Reynolds, "will change the distribution center manager’s role from one of managing people and the physical warehouse operations to spending more time outside of the warehouse working with other functional areas within the organization."

“Imagine if you could improve — even double — workforce productivity in the warehouse or distribution center. Wouldn’t that be sweet? In their new book, Warehouse Productivity, authors Ron Hounsell and Pat Kelley present a blue-collar incentive plan that is designed to do just that. ”
